Relaxation

Relaxation is at the core of everything we do in yoga. Relaxation is both the goal and the process.  The goal is to be relaxed while practicing yoga so we can be more relaxed in daily life. But the word "relax" is vague. What does "relax" even mean exactly?

Relaxation could mean feeling less mental stress, less muscular strain, unrestricted rhythmic breathing, a deep sleep and more. The tricky thing about relaxation is that it's easy to do when you are doing it but it's hard to do when you are not. It's simple really. When you are relaxed, relaxation is easy. When you are stressed, relaxation is hard.

So don't be stressed. Impossible? Probably! So let's do the next best thing and practicing managing stress.

So many people have asked me how I live a life with "no stress."

Uh, buddy have you seen inside my mind??

I'd say I'm as stressed out as the average 36 year old married father of a 2 year old daughter in 2018 America. Which to say is, yes, I definitely have things to stress out about.

So what's my secret to relaxation? The secret is really not a secret at all. I do the free stuff. I do the easy stuff. I don't look for a magic bullet to cure all my problems. I don't try to solve my stress with things that only cause more stress like alcohol. I follow a practice of yoga which has trained me over years to manage the stress better.

Meditation is free. Breathing is free. Yoga is free. You can start right now. But unless I hype it up and put a huge price tag on it, many of you will not take action. Why? Because you only value things with said high price tag. If it's free it must not work.

I do my daily practice every morning and it sets the tone for my day. I do my mediation every night and it helps me relax and unwind from the day. These things cost me nothing aside from a total of 20 minutes of my time.

If you are overwhelmed and don't know where to start try to keep it simple. Start with a simple, easy daily practice and go from there. And if you can get in a full practice such as the one below, that's even better.
